The Twins Table: A Flexible and Multipurpose Design

Creating Versatile Living Spaces with Wenhan Zhang and Sarah Dezember

The Twins Table was created for homeowners who need flexible, multipurpose furniture that allows them to seamlessly transition between functions.

Individuals living in big cities often have smaller spaces that are required to serve an ever-changing and ever-growing number of needs. The Twins Table addresses this architectural challenge for flexible living. In its everyday configuration, the one side of the round table seats two people comfortably. When extra space is needed for a working surface, or need seats for more people, simply open up the other side to expand the table in size. When completely closed, the Twins Table can be stored away or used as decoration.

The Twins Table, designed by Wenhan Zhang and Sarah Dezember, is made using Formica Laminate which offers a broad range of looks allowing for customization. Clients can choose between using solid colors or wood grain as the primary finish, ensuring that the table complements any interior design style.

Measuring at 1420mm x 660mm x 762cm, the Twins Table is compact yet functional, making it ideal for small living spaces. Its construction method is simple, allowing customers to easily assemble the table at home. The use of modern laminate not only enhances the table's durability but also adds to its aesthetic appeal.

The Twins Table offers four different forms, each catering to specific needs. In its first form, it functions as a round coffee table. The second form utilizes Formica's Writable surface, transforming a portion of the table into a drawing board. The third form, when the square surface is lifted, acts as a small work surface. Finally, when both square forms of the table are expanded, it functions as a dining table for four people.

During the project development phase, the design team faced the challenge of creating a unique and fresh perspective on a typical piece of furniture. With the market already flooded with tables, the Twins Table needed to stand out while remaining affordable and accessible. The result is a design that combines functionality, versatility, and affordability.

The Twins Table project started in December 2021 in Chicago and was completed in January 2022 in China. The design team conducted extensive research on the daily needs and habits of millennials, considering the unique demands of city-living and work flexibility. Their goal was to create a design solution that delivers convenient and economical products for customers.

Recognized for its well-designed, practical, and innovative features, the Twins Table was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is given to creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
